Linux agent

On Linux the agent is a single 64-bit binary that runs as a systemd service. It comes as a .deb package for Debian, Ubuntu and Proxmox VE. There is no desktop app on Linux.

Install from the .deb

  1. Download the Linux installer for the tenant. See Deploying agents.

  2. Install it:

    sudo apt install ./<downloaded file>.deb

The package installs the agent as /usr/local/bin/cvn-agent, adds the cvn-agent systemd service and starts it. On first start the service enrols with your server.

  3. Set the backup passphrase and the folder to protect:

sudo CVN_PASSPHRASE='your backup passphrase' cvn-agent install --path /srv/data

This saves the passphrase in the agent's configuration and rewrites the service to back up that folder. Until a passphrase is set, the service runs but skips backups.

Choose what to back up

The service backs up the folder given to --path. To protect several folders or manage the list centrally, assign the device a policy. See Policies and schedules. To back up databases on the server, add a backup source. See Databases and Proxmox sources.

Disk images

sudo cvn-agent image-backup --config /etc/cvn-agent/agent.json reads the system disk as a raw image and stores it through the same encrypted pipeline. Use it for servers you may need to rebuild from bare metal. See Bare-metal and VM recovery.

Where things are

Item Location
Binary /usr/local/bin/cvn-agent
Configuration /etc/cvn-agent/agent.json (readable only by root)
Service log service.log next to the configuration
Service systemctl status cvn-agent

Updates

The agent checks your server for a newer build when it connects and every six hours after. It checks the build's SHA-256 hash and our Ed25519 release signature, then swaps the binary and restarts the service. A build that fails the check is not installed.
