Installation

MSP Backups installs with one script, install.sh. It runs as root on a fresh Ubuntu or Debian server, sets up the server components and asks you a short list of questions.

Run the installer

  1. Sign in to your account at account.cvntechnologies.com and open your MSP Backups licence.

  2. Download install.sh, or copy the one-line install command shown there.

  3. Copy the script to your server and run it as root:

    sudo bash install.sh

  4. Answer the questions listed below. The installer checks each answer before it moves on.

  5. When it finishes, open your domain in a browser and sign in as the global admin you created. Continue with Your first tenant.

What it checks first

  • The operating system is Ubuntu 22.04+ or Debian 12+. Anything else stops the install with a clear message.
  • The server has enough CPU, memory and disk space.
  • Which prerequisites are already installed, so it only adds what is missing.

What it asks for

Question Notes
Licence key Redeemed against your account. This binds the licence to your domain.
Domain The address your team, your clients and every agent will use. Agents keep this address, so choose it carefully.
First global admin Email and password for your own account. Turn on MFA when you first sign in.
Platform name The name shown in the portals, emails and agent installers. Editable later. See Branding and white-label.
Email (SMTP) Optional. Used for invitations and password resets.
Let's Encrypt Optional. Gets and renews a free certificate for your domain.

The installer generates the database password, the token-signing secret and the other internal secrets itself. You never type them.

What it installs

  • The API server and the web portals.
  • PostgreSQL 16 for tenants, devices and restore-point records, with row-level security turned on and the app connecting as a role that cannot bypass it.
  • Redis, used for rate limiting.
  • A web server that serves the portals over HTTPS and passes the agents' WebSocket connections through to the API.
  • The agent builds for Windows, macOS and Linux, which the server packages into installers on demand.

Storage targets are added after install, from the portal. See Storage targets and replication.

Re-running and failures

  • The installer is safe to run again on the same server, for example after you fix a wrong answer.
  • Every step is written to a log file. If something fails, the installer cleans up what it started and tells you where the log is.
