macOS agent

On macOS the agent is a single binary for Intel (x86-64) Macs. It installs itself as a launchd service and is managed from the portal and the command line. There is no desktop app on macOS.

Install

  1. Download the macOS installer for the tenant. See Deploying agents.

  2. Open Terminal in the folder you saved it to and make it executable:

    chmod +x ./<downloaded file>

  3. Install it with a passphrase and the folder to protect:

    sudo CVN_PASSPHRASE='your backup passphrase' ./<downloaded file> install --path /Users

The agent enrols with your server, saves the passphrase in its configuration and starts the service.

You can also run the binary with sudo and no arguments. It then asks for the passphrase twice, but backs up a default folder. Use the install command above so you choose the folder.

macOS limits access to user folders for background processes. Grant the agent Full Disk Access under System Settings > Privacy & Security if backups of user folders come back empty or fail with permission errors.

Choose what to back up

A Mac backs up the folder given to --path. To protect several folders, or to manage the list centrally, assign the device a policy with the folders listed. See Policies and schedules.

Where things are

Item Location
Configuration /Library/Application Support/cvn-agent/agent.json
Service /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.cvn.vault.agent.plist

Updates

The agent checks your server for a newer build when it connects and every six hours after, verifies our release signature and restarts itself with it.

What macOS does not support

  • Disk-image backups and bare-metal recovery.
  • Restores in a desktop app. Restore files from the user portal or the command line instead. See Restoring files and folders.
